Stuff to do

Published by psi2008 at 12:04 am under Uncategorized Edit This

I am a high energy person.  I get up early and go to bed late.  In between I look for stuff to do to stimulate my “monkey mind”.  The more the better.  I have a stack of books to read if I have to get away from it all.  I need a book to go to the restroom, to wait in the doctor’s office, to wait while my computer downloads or in between commercials on tv.  My dad was with me on a subway ride when I was a child.  He commented on the fact that I had a book on the trip.  My husband also comments on it, often.  You could say I am a voracious reader.  Its a characteristic of my zodiac sign.  I’m not making excuses, its just the way I am.  I like to read.  I like to read written language.  I can read in English and Spanish.

I can teach Spanish but basically I just prefer to use my knowledge to expand the books I can read.  Reading is up there with eating and sex in my book (tongue in cheek).  When the world gets on my nerves I can pull out a book, or magazine or anything written and leave  the here and now for a few minutes.  Its as if I crawl into another dimension.  I can listen to the words of someone else tell me a story that differs from the one I’m in.   What they tell me can at times be gruesome, or funny or sexy but at least its distracting.  My husband accused me of reading while he drove.  He wasn’t offering any conversation so why not read?  At least the author or the characters were conversing with me or themselves.   Hater!

Reading is a skill offered to anyone who pursues an education.  Too many students are allowed to progress through the school systems without a firm enough grasp on this fundamental skill.  In order to enjoy reading you have to get to a certain point of fluency.  There has to be an inner voice.  You have to be able to hear it when you read and form images.

When I went through high school English I often didn’t have time to read the assigned novels.  I made friends with Cliff Notes and classic movies.  In my mind, although I hadn’t read the novels thoroughly I knew the movie director had.  Once I graduated I had the time to read these books at my leisure.  It got me through.

I’ve lived in lots of places and I’m considering moving to another city once again.  I will try to pick a place that is lively enough but it will have to have a good library.  If I get bored there will always be malls, cable tv, satellite tv, and books.

I can probably live without friends but I cannot live without stuff to do.  Books are like life preservers for me.  They are  my faithful friends.  They will always be at the top of  my list of stuff to do.  Seriously!
