Day Jobs

Published by psi2008 at 11:14 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Did you ever stop to think about work?  I mean some people work long hours for very little pay and minimal or no benefits.  Then there are the Hollywood stars who reinvent themselves long enough to pose and act like other people for ungodly amounts.  Some are lucky to have talent and others are geniuses at bamboozle.  Either way they make lots and lots of money.  If you’re particularly blessed you have a job that pays you what you are worth in talent, sweat or brains.

Me.  I’ve sweated it out in schools and got degrees.  Unlike many I chose to leave the workforce to concentrate on my family.  That seems to have been a mistake.  However, because I enjoyed actually enjoyed this oasis of maternity.  I didn’t have to think of the next day’s workload while juggling the laundry, shopping and family outings.  I remember making this decision one Saturday while grading a pile of papers, looking at a pile of freshly laundered clothes in a basket waiting to be folded and feeling the tug of my son wanting to go somewhere.  I decided to leave the pile of papers and take him and his sister out.  It was so liberating to only have one thing to worry about.  The kids and the family.  One year all that kept me sane during a year of teaching was the family vacation I had planned for us in Cancun.  Nothing could make me crazy when I thought of that upcoming trip. I was smiling all the way.

I wonder how someone like Sarah Palin can juggle family and a Vice Presidency.  PLEASE!  Her husband and family will have to more than step up.  Its because I know what a real juggling act entails that I don’t admire her wanting to do it.

I wish for everyone a day job that they can’t wait to get to.  A job that values their talents, sweat and brains.  I hope you have a boss that treats you with the respect you deserve.  We have to work to live.  Its a fact.  I hope you get to a place where you want to live to work.  If you hate your job, do what you can now, today to change that.  Life is too short to spend hating what you do.  You’ve heard it before and I’m saying it again.  Find your special gift (we all have one) and put it to work for your livelihood.  Take a week or a year to find it but find it.  It may be that you are a bartender during the day and a writer at night.  Do it.  You may be a musician, artist, plumber or caregiver at heart.  Find out what your gift is.  Day jobs may just be what we have to do to afford what we want to do.  Take the time to know the difference.  Seriously!
